On Thursday, Nov. 20, as part of a unique collaboration between Junior Achievement (JA), the U.S. Small Business Administration, and the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), students at Brooklyn Preparatory High School met several rising business stars - local entrepreneurs who have jumpstarted and/or contributed to the growing national and local interest in entrepreneurship as a viable career path for young people. Nine local business innovators used their personal stories of success to inspire 130 10th grade students to develop entrepreneurship skill sets and thinking to increase their future career options.
The YEC entrepreneur presenters were: Eli Ostreicher of Regal Wings; Brian Honigman, Marketing Consultant, Writer and Speaker, Rebecca Zorowitz founder of Ooh La La Brands, Deepti Kapur, Founder of Food to Eat, Michael Parrish DuDell, Entrepreneur, Speaker and Best Selling Author; Kate Wheatcroft, Founder of Bien Cuit; Alex Frias, Co-founder and President, Track Marketing Group; Kim Kaupe, founder of ZinePak, and Joe Apfelbaum, founder of Ajax Union.
"According to the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, [DSC_0966]Brooklyn has about 30,000 small businesses. Many are small, and employ just one two people, though by definition a "small business" can have up to as many as twenty employees. There are "83,000 self-employed people working in Brooklyn, with more than a third of them (35 percent, or 29,000 people) owning incorporated businesses organizations as well as small private businesses," says the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerces publication, Brooklyn Labor Market Review, in a report on small business and immigrant entrepreneurship."
