Tom Petrie has made his grandchildren's experience with Junior Achievement more memorable because he volunteered to teach JA programs in their classes this school year. Tom has been a JA volunteer at Sheridan Hill Elementary School and Harris Hill Elementary School of Buffalo, NY since 2005 and taught students at Immaculate Conception School of East Aurora, NY.

When teaching, "Tom speaks with confidence and passion," said Linda Reagan, first grade teacher at Harris Hill Elementary School. "This quality is infectious and motivating. My students love when 'Mr. P' comes, and they soak up every second with him."

In addition to his grandson's first grade class, Tom has also taught JA Our Families to two classes at Harris Hill. He shared knowledge about jobs of family members and the ways in which people earn money to pay for necessities and luxuries.

To teach his granddaughter's second-grade class, Tom traveled to Immaculate Conception every week. His rapport with the students is great. At this school, Tom teaches JA Our Community.

JA employees have observed Tom when he teaches JA programs and witnessed his hands-on approach. During the Sweet "O" Donuts lesson, he has had students decorate their own donuts, to teach them about production, goods, and services.

To meet program requests, Tom has also volunteered to teach JA Our Region to fourth graders at Immaculate Conception. "His preparation and effort to learn our fourth grade curriculum was put to good use as he also participated in Tops Friendly Markets' JA in a Day on June 10, at St. Mary's of Swormsville, East Amherst, NY," wrote Justine Waldron, Education and Public Relations Manager for JA of Western New York.

Tom has taught a total of twenty classes and has participated in JA Bowl-A-Thon each year. Every JA employee and each school teacher that has had the pleasure of working with Tom appreciate his time and dedication. They are happy he includes his grandchildren in the group of many JA kids he impacts every year.
